W. Hanrahan to Moses Tison, Bill of Sale

Harahan for myself my heirs, executors, and administrators shall and warrant and forever defend the aforesaid negto against the claims of all persons whatsoever unto the said Moses Turnage [sic] his heirs, executors, administrators, and assigns. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 25th day of July in the year of our Lord 1823.

witness:  Thomas Hanrahan      signed:  W. Hanrahan {seal}

February Term, 1826. The above Bill of Sale from Walter Hanrahan to Moses Turnage[sic] was then proved in open court by the oath of Thomas Hanrahan, a witness. Thereto ordered to be registered.

Attest Jas. Sheppard, Clerk

Interesting that this deed has a clerical error in the title. Moses Tison (as in the title) is referred to in the body as Moses Turnage (a very common Pitt County surname) over and over.

Good luck on your research!

I was hoping I would have the time this week to get out and do some research at the Library of Virginia. However, middle school exams to be taken by a surly pre-teen and a house rennovation have intruded on my regular schedule and threw me off. I will get out to the LDS library to order a film tomorrow and maybe do some census research. I am trying to figure out a few relationships from the early 1900′s.
Luckily, my digitizing projects have been proceeding nicely. I am grateful that I have pictures of all but one great-grandparent on my Briley side. I only have about 50 more pics in dad’s album. It will be fun to hand him back his album and a DVD of his pictures.

This is a new topic for me. The Friends of Friends meme in the genealogy blogging community asks if you have encountered records of enslaved ancestors, whether they are your own ancestors or not, make it a point to transcribe those records and get them posted on the Internet via your blog. Hopefully, to help their decendants. I have come across, recently, many deeds listing the sale of slaves and their names and owners. This will be my first post on this topic and I will continue it at least one Friday a month.
Well, I have been digging through the many Pitt County deeds I have copied in my stash (of paper records) and thought since I am finding quite a few slave records, I would participate in this as I come across the records. I also have ancestors who left records of slave transactions, so I will include those also.
Here ...
Friends of Friends-Deed is a post from: Briley Genealogy

Here is the first thing I came across. It is actually a record of 2 sales to the same person from different sellers. These deeds are from Pitt County, North Carolina, Deed Book L page 281.
